Sport, entrepreneurship and sunshine!

Today is graduation day for all students finishing High school here in Ulricehamn. Outside my window white dressed young women and suit dressed young men pass by with champagne bottles and glasses in their hands. The sun is shining, summer is here and after graduation most of them will go on a non-official school trip somewhere. I spoke to some students who are going to Greece next week and who were all looking forward to the rest of their lives. There is something very energetic about young people with no plans, no worries but lots of ideas about what life can become!

Yesterday I went to a lecture with one of Sweden’s most famous entrepreneurs. There is a network in Ulricehamn called Kubbhjulet 35 and they arrange lectures and visits to businesses here in Ulricehamn. The speaker yesterday was Bert Karlsson and for the Swedish readers this is a well-known person but for the Dutch readers you can compare him with John de Mol in the Netherlands. Bert Karlsson started his first business at the age of 13 and has had his biggest successes in the Swedish music industry but he also makes TV programs, musicals, theatre plays, writes books and is involved in several other projects. He despises democracy, dislikes politicians and has an opinion about everything but he is also a talented speaker and it is difficult not to be impressed with his achievements. I guess I found him as brutal as I expected but smarter.

This weekend all schools in Ulricehamn compete in a football competition (Klassbollen) and I will be in charge of Ingrid’s class team. Hundreds of kids, their parents and other supporters will meet up in this annual competition. Sport plays an important role in this town and I think this is something to take advantage of. Ulricehamn has lots of different sport clubs, fantastic nature to use for cross-country skiing, down hill skiing or mountain biking. You can sail or canoe here and the top of Swedish orienteering runners come from Ulricehamn. As the municipality want to grow I think we should look at what we have and what makes this place unique. Why not strive to make this place the best sport municipality in West Sweden and strengthen and develop the possibilities to practice sport at the highest level here?
